Odoo Community or Enterprise: how to choose without regrets
Licensing, apps, hosting, real cost over three years: the actual differences between the two Odoo editions, and the questions to ask before you choose.
It is often the first question in an Odoo project, and it is rarely asked the right way. People compare feature lists, when the real issue lies elsewhere: what your business needs today and in three years, and what you are willing to pay every year to get it.
As an independent integrator, we work with both editions. Here is how we help our clients decide.
Two editions, one foundation
Odoo Enterprise is not a different product: it is Odoo Community plus a layer of apps and services reserved for Odoo S.A. subscribers. Your data, your core screens and the way you work stay the same. That is what makes it possible to switch from one to the other later.
| Odoo Community | Odoo Enterprise | |
|---|---|---|
| Licence | Open source (LGPL v3) | Odoo S.A. subscription |
| Cost per user | None | Per user per year, paid to Odoo S.A. |
| Apps | The essentials: sales, purchasing, inventory, invoicing, point of sale, manufacturing, CRM… | The same, plus: full accounting, Studio, e-signature, planning, helpdesk, quality, barcode… |
| Hosting | Wherever you want | Odoo Online, Odoo.sh or your own servers |
What Community really lacks
For many SMEs, the question comes down to three topics:
- Full accounting. Community provides invoicing; advanced accounting reports belong to Enterprise. In Community, you get them through modules from the OCA (the association that maintains Odoo’s open-source modules) and, in Tunisia, through our own localisation modules.
- Warehouse barcode scanning. The dedicated app is Enterprise-only; OCA modules cover receipts, transfers and inventory counts by scanning very well.
- Studio, the no-code customisation tool. Very handy, but rarely essential if you work with an integrator.
In other words: most of Community’s “gaps” can be filled with modules, provided someone masters them and maintains them for every new version.
The right question: the three-year cost
Always compare over three years, not just the first year.
- With Enterprise, the licence cost grows with the number of users. For 5 users it is reasonable; for 40, it is a significant budget line, every year.
- With Community, there is no per-user cost: you pay for hosting based on server resources, plus the integration of additional modules.
Then add what both have in common: implementation, training, support.
Our decision grid
We usually recommend Enterprise when:
- you want advanced apps without development (e-signature, planning, Studio);
- your team is small and your licence budget stays moderate;
- you prefer online hosting managed by the vendor.
And Community when:
- you have many users, especially at the point of sale or in the warehouse;
- you want to control your budget and where your data lives;
- your needs are covered by the standard plus a few targeted modules.
If in doubt, starting with Community and moving to Enterprise later is possible: your data follows. The reverse is possible too, but Enterprise-only apps must then be replaced.
In practice
During scoping, we list your processes, identify for each one the app that covers it in each edition, and cost both scenarios over three years. You choose on figures, not on a brochure.
One important point about Enterprise: the subscription is bought directly from Odoo S.A. We help you size it as accurately as possible, and our services are invoiced separately.
